Around Briones Rez, DMSR*
Details
NOTE: For these runs, a (Meetup) "Going" and/or (Strava) "I’m in": Is REQ'D – don’t just show up! AND, if you change your mind, DROP at least 4 hrs before. Without these steps: you may be removed from BRC’s Strava or Meetup clubs.
*Drew’s Midweek Sun Runs (DMSR): an experimental tiny little division of BRC.
Drew: That’s me, most would say I’m not super slow, nor am I speedy, I love being on trails in nature.
Midweek: Potentially any weekday, and for now, on an occasional/irregular schedule (also maybe “Moderate”-- see pace info above). Clearly this is not for everyone (sorry), but hopefully for some. Flexible schedule, irregular hours, some time off? – here for ya :-D.
Sun: During daylight hours, it could be cloudy, hopefully not rainy. Also maybe “Social” as in not solo, and who knows, sometimes there could be optional beer/food after if there’s interest.
Runs: Yes, it’s running, though I do usually hike the steep hills. We’ll aim to post estimates elapsed trail time for these outings (includes breaks/regroups).
*YOU* are responsible for your safety and assume all risk by coming. Bring sufficient water, calories, layers, positive attitude, etc, and don’t get yourself into anything you can’t get safely out of. Not a beginner run, experience with running miles on hilly trails and ability to read trail maps is required.
The RUN: Let's run around Briones Reservoir! Yup, a counterclockwise circumnavigation. Things are lined up for lots of greens and blues for this one, hopefully without too much of that sticky brown stuff. Even the fireroads are looking a bit like fairways. The largest hills are 450 feet and 300 feet. The rest of it is rolling. After 9 miles of fire roads with expansive vistas, it’s time for a few miles of wooded single-track.
PACE: We’ll have some regroups, and *try* to keep together, but if our paces are way different we may end up running separately. Come route-ready and prepared to navigate if needed. If you’re faster, it’s fine to run ahead if you’d like.
STATS: 13 miles, 1800 feet, my estimated elapsed trail time: 2.5 hrs
(if you're way slower than that and you want a companion, bring a friend, since we may end up running separately).
EBMUD requires a permit, and I've got one for us. NO DOGS.
DEETS and GETTING THERE: Be careful or you'll end up in the wrong place! There are two trailheads with the same name (yes, silly I know). Most of you will be turning onto Bear Creek Rd from Camino Pablo (others adjust). There’s a long hill. On the way up, on the left, there’s Briones Overlook trailhead lot (bumpy paved lot) – that’s not it! Continue up and over the hill. After reaching the bottom of the hill, you’ll pass Happy Valley Rd on the right. Now slow down, over a small bridge, about 400 feet from Happy Valley Rd, there’s an entrance to a EBMUD dirt lot on the left, that's us. Another half mile further on the right, there’s a paved entrance road with a big sign - "Bear Creek Staging Area" - that's not it, turn around!
And here’s a link to the spot: https://goo.gl/maps/q2u973YQCzvL4kRm7
And here's Lat/Lon: 37°55'20.1"N 122°09'52.1"W
FACILITIES: NO WATER, so bring plenty! – yup, a bit ironic, but my local water utility district provides no fountains on its expansive lands.
Porta Potty at trailhead, and pit toilet at 9 miles (slight detour).
