Rust NYC: Geometry in Rust at Motif + Rust on RISC‑V/ESP32

Details

Join us on Tuesday, September 9th at Materialize. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. to give attendees plenty of time to grab pizza and socialize, and the talks begin at 7:30 p.m.

Talk 1 — Nikolay (Motif)

Motif is an online workspace where building design teams bring plans and 3D models together, see updates live, and collaborate in one place instead of juggling files

At Motif, Nikolay has been building a native Rust geometry pipeline that interoperates with a long‑standing C++ kernel. He’ll walk through why he chose Rust, how the team approached visualization/system structure (including where Bevy fit), and how they made the FFI boundary safe and predictable. This is a candid account of what worked, what didn’t, and the patterns they’d use again. Takeaways focus on decision-making and real-world constraints, not theory.

Talk 2 — Robert (ESP32 / RISC‑V)

Robert has been exploring embedded Rust on ESP32 (RISC‑V generation) and will share the path he took: getting set up, bringing up peripherals, and deciding when to use HALs versus lower‑level control. He’ll cover how he approached debugging, timing, and power concerns, and why 2025 feels like the right moment to jump in. Expect practical lessons, trade‑offs, and what he’d do differently next time, rather than a prescriptive tutorial.

It should be a good time! Hope to see you there!
