If other life forms exist on other planets or their moons, must their biochemistry be like ours? “Weird life” describes hypothetical life forms that rely on a fundamentally different biochemistry from anything currently known. For example, could life be based on silicon rather than carbon? Could it rely on a liquid other than water? This isn’t just science fiction anymore, but real questions proposed and studied by astrobiologists at NASA and universities around the world. What light can chemistry shed on these questions?

There will be no presentation tonight. Bring your own dinner. We will provide some drinks. If you want to bring something to share, that is fine.

There are many mysteries related to the origin of life. When we thought cellular contents as protoplasm, there was one mystery. What is protoplasm. Now we know that protoplasm is not a thing, but the cell is filled with marvelous machines. And every machine has an origin shrouded in mystery. At the top of my list is the ribosome.

The ribosomes are molecular machines made of proteins and RNA which make other proteins from messenger RNA. Ribosomes make the proteins to build ribosomes. Come learn a little about what makes life work and see the hand of God.

The genetic code represents the intersection of biochemistry, engineering, and logic. Fascinating in its own right, the genetic code also has theological implications. How did the code originate? Are there laws that necessitate a particular code or any code? Could the code have arisen by chance? How are the molecules engineered to work with ribosomes? What kind of minds has it taken for humans to come to understand the genetic code? What kind of mind would it take to think of the code originally?
