Budget Portrait Lighting Basics

Details

Come join me in the studio as I present this workshop again! I will be showing you how to get better portraits. I will demonstrate 3 different lighting setups and discuss some posing and lighting tips and techniques.

Just to spice things up a bit I will be using a "budget" lighting setup that will consist of two umbrellas and two generic hot shoe flash. The total setup will be less than $250. This will be a great chance to not only learn how to get the results that you see below but also to learn how to do it on a tight budget.

Our model will be Sarah:

Agenda:

  • Lighting setup and instruction
  • Instruction on lighting, posing, and photographing the model
  • Wrap up and Q&A

This workshop is targeted at anyone but you must have a camera with a hot shoe and that is capable of manual exposure control. The first 45 minutes will be setup and discussion of the lighting equipment and measurement. Once we have the model on set I will demonstrate each of the lighting setups and some posing. I will be shooting tethered so we can see exactly what type of results we are getting with the setups.

Each participant will have a chance to work with the model for one or more of the 3 setups.

This is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to learn more about studio lighting, work with the off camera flashes and modifiers, learn how to use a light meter, setup flattering portrait lighting setups, communicate with your subject, as well as some posing techniques.

Things you will need:

  • Camera (any DLSR)
  • PocketWizard III+ if you have one (if not we will have spares)

I will provide:

  • Lighting equipment
  • Beverages
