Gilded Rose: A Refactoring Kata

Details

Update: I spoke with an experienced kata facilitator and he suggested we try mobbing: instead of breaking into groups we'll all work on the exercise in one group on one screen. I'll give more details at the event.

In this hands-on session we'll sharpen our software development skills with a refactoring kata, an exercise where we practice improving existing code. We'll tackle Gilded Rose, created by Terry Hughes and popularized by Emily Bache. Originally written in C#, Gilded Rose has been ported to most major languages (see the link for a list).

Who Should Attend
Anyone interested in practicing coding skills or supporting others to do the same.

Timeline
6:30-7:00 pm - Doors open. Free-form networking. You are also free to start working on the kata at this time.
7:00-8:10 pm - We'll look at the Gilded Rose kata and go over the requirements, then start mobbing.
8:10-8:30 pm - We'll do a quick retrospective on our experiences.

This is a joint session between Coder Consortium and Sacramento Software Engineers.
