What we’re about

We are (www.svas.org) the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society (SVAS), and we are the oldest Astronomy group (Since 1945) of amateur/professional astronomers promoting an interest in Astronomy. Join us at various locations and also at our Observatory high in the Sierras. Before the pandemic, and hopefully again soon, we conducted public star parties at schools, museums, and other venues, as well as public presentations on astronomical topics. Members of SVAS have access to our Observatory and the large telescopes there, most notably the 16-inch Ritchey-Chretien!

We have established a GoFundMe account to assist us in helping youth learn more about astronomy and science in general.

Please donate at https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/help-our-youth-learn-about-science

This money will be used in a variety of ways, such as:  - Recruiting youths by holding special stargazing activities,

  - Helping support a student science scholarship program,

  - Holding telescope workshops,

  - Maintaining telescopes used in our school stargazing programs, and

  - Sponsoring member and public stargazing activities.

All society officers, directors and support help are unpaid volunteers, so 100% of your tax deductible donation goes exclusively to pay for costs related to the above activities.

We are based in Sacramento, California and have been operating as one of the oldest astronomical societies in the United States for over 75 years. So please help us by donating so that we can recruit teenagers and young adults to learn about the wonders of astronomy. We welcome you to visit our website at https://svas.org.
