Virtual Humans, Real Safety: The Role of Human Body Models in Early-Stage Vehicle Safety Development

ABSTRACT
Traffic injuries and fatalities remain a major global problem despite decades of safety technology progress. Physical crash tests are expensive and only possible once a vehicle exists, when design freedom has largely disappeared — and crash test dummies capture limited body types and measure loads, not injury mechanisms.
This makes early virtual testing essential, and Human Body Models play a critical role by representing anatomy, posture, and biomechanical response across a far broader population and scenario space.
This session reviews where the industry stands and what remains open — and how Autoliv's HBM Safety Suite addresses these challenges.
