About us
The purpose of this group is to have lively, probing, but respectful deep dives into all sorts of intellectual topics: philosophical, psychological, cultural, metaphysical, political. The format is informal and not meant to be a podcast-style debate; however, it should also be full of fair and reasonable exchange as I hope folks will not only freely and in an informed manner express their views but will also welcome the chance to learn and perhaps have their views tweaked here and there. Too often in our society now we just yell at each other or, worse, use ad hominem attacks to make our points; this group will help expand everyone's knowledge of and understanding about the topic, or so I hope. I know there are folks out there hungry for purposeful, respectful debate and discussion about serious things, and so I want to create this group in this area, as far as I know the only one like this. Topics can be as wide-ranging as the following possibilities: What constitutes happiness? Why do we strive? How do we maintain important relationships when the views and values of the people involved change? What are some things local politicians should be doing in this county (Washington)? Has science (or technology) become the new god? Is AI going to replace the need for humans themselves? And so on. I will publish two topics every month for that meetup's discussion, and participants will vote on which one to start with. We will discuss that one until we feel satisfied with that topic and then dive into the second topic if there is time--or just leave it until another meeting. I would love to eventually meet at regular participants' homes, but at first we'll meet at coffee shops or bistros for what I hope will be fun, engaging, stimulating conversation that may lead to lasting friendships as well as deep dives into timely and timeless topics.
