(I expect the segment on LINode will start ~7:45. We'll start w a brief call-for-help, announcements, general Q&A @ 6:30.)
Our group tends to be more techie than content. We're mostly SysAdmins, Network managers/engineers, programmers,... but we should know a little about setting up the ubiquitous website. So, here are 4 quick "thunder talks" that will start you on Web Site Development.
Web Dev night.
by Scott Granneman
1st Topic: Archiving Web pages Alternatives (did you really get EVERYTHING you need?)
How do you back up a website. Is the backup a complete archive? Are there things that are referenced or pulled into what is seen on-screen, and will that "visual presentation"...that "format" be saved along with the content? And since the SysAdmin or Operating System guy is usually the guy doing back-ups at the system level, they will expect you to know the back-up strategy at the web=page level.
2nd Topic: Securing WordPress. WordPress is perhaps the most used sftwr to build websites for personal & small business. BUT...what should we do to make it secure? Free and easy to build blogs or web sites. Open source content management system (CMS) written in PHP and paired with a MySQL or MariaDB database with supported HTTPS. But, its highly targeted by bad actors.
3rd topic: Setting up a Linode. A Linux DOT COM NODE in the cloud that provides virtual private servers.
4th topic: Visual Studio Code (beginner level). Aka VS-Code. Free code editor redefined and optimized for building and debugging modern web and cloud applications. For MS-Windows, Linux & macOS.
