## MAIN Topic: Introduction to Linux

### Presenter: Stan Reichardt

Experienced Linux users may be called upon, need to or want to explain Linux or introduce Linux to others.
This material was derived from presentation slides originally produced by Microcenter in 2009 and may not have been given at any of our previous meetings. It is something that may help beginners or you may want to use it to help others. It is an introduction to Linux that specifically targets those with very limited knowledge of computer technology.
We want it to be a good and informative overview of Linux for the curious. We hope to improve the explanations, while giving accurate and positive information.
Participation by those new to Linux and also those that have been using Linux for some time, may be very helpful in improving it. We expect and want comments, recommendations, and suggestions for improvement. This may take a bit of time. Therefore, from the beginning of this session, the slides will be made available; so that, participants can fully know and understand what will be covered and what may need to be changed.
Although most of our regular attendees have considerable Linux experience, it is always good to look back at what "grounded" us in the beginning. As this helps to explain to others, including bosses, "WHY". Please help us make it better.

Zoom Link Details will be published on https://www.sluug.org/ when available.

That will follow our basic/tutorial session which starts at 6:30.

## BASE Topic: grep

### A Gentle Introduction to Regular Expressions for Playing Wordle.

### Presenter: Robert Citek

If you have ever played Wordle, you eventually begin to ask yourself questions like, What is the "best" start word? What should my second and subsequent guesses be? And, what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
While there are numerous websites, blogs, YouTube videos, etc. that purport to help you answer these questions, they may not. Know that, in this talk Robert will introduce an old Unix tool, grep. The tool grep is used to search for patterns in files. Initially written by Ken Thompson of Unix fame more than 50 years ago, grep ( and its ilk ) uses regular expressions to match text patterns.
Robert will demonstrate and then explain how grep can be used to select and exclude words from a list of five-letter words. By iteratively applying grep and adjusting the regular expression patterns based on the information from previous guesses, an initial 10,000+ word list can be whittled down to just a handful of words ( and possibly just one word. )

The Saint Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG) is an IRS 501c(6) designated not-for-profit professional association dedicated to education and communication among computer users.
SLUUG is your forum for exchanging information about OPEN standards, OPEN systems, OPEN source, products, services and architectures.
We usually start the general meeting with our BASE introductory level session (often focused on personal computing), which may include either simple tutorials, displays of newly discovered web sites, command line wonders, demonstrations of useful applications, amazing graphical packages, major resolution of long standing anomalies, blinking lights, or quantum shifts in both time and space. Then we will have our usually quick welcome, introduction, administrative announcements, and a Call For Help - Questions and Answers Period. After all that, we take a break before our MAIN event.
