About us

A KL reading group exploring how we should live together โ€” and what we owe one another.

At Salon Kita, we read and discuss ideas about freedom, equality and justice through Socratic dialogue, and ask what they mean in Malaysia through everyday situations and case studies.

We believe democracy requires more than agreement. It requires the ability to encounter different ideas, understand arguments we disagree with, and negotiate how we live together.

As we read this, we will be considering Malaysia's Lindung 24 Jam (SOCSO) scheme in the back of our minds:
It pays out whether you were hit by a falling signboard through no fault of your own, or crashed your motorbike while speeding.
Now that the scheme is voluntary,

First published in 1999, Elizabeth S. Anderson's "What is the point of equality?" critiques luck egalitarianism, which broadly refers to the idea that justice means compensating people for bad luck that they didn't choose. Anderson argues that this approach leads to inconsistencies and may even humiliate individuals by forcing them to prove that they're deserving victims of misfortune, noting that the basis of luck egalitarianism is "pity" as opposed to compassion. Anderson instead argues for "democratic equality", where everyone relates to one another as free and equal citizens, rather than superiors and inferiors.

Participants will receive a pdf of the article and a terminology + reading guide upon signing up! We will be focusing primarily on pages 308 - 337.
