Re: [skeptics-195] May I have your thoughts, please?

Steve,

1) I may be the exception, but I find the current venue just OK.  Its ok during good weather but seems a bit of a banishment in the cold.
2)  As I don't attend every month, I probably wouldn't attend twice per month, but it would be nice to have a different setting to choose from than just the back patio of a bar. Perhaps we could explore different spots like parks, other bars, public places or even hold it at someone's house and do a potluck style meetup.
3)  I also attend Ex-Mormon groups which also have high dosages of skepticsm.  They are held twice per week at a coffee shop on 33rd and are pretty informal. (Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons)
4)  In general, I might like a bit more structure to these events, if nothing else to get the conversation going in a particular direction.  For example at the Thursday coffee night they usually do a different structure each time ranging from a set topic to book reviews and even a bit of informal group therapy.  I think my idea of skepticism varies a lot compared to the scholastic/formal defined version and it'd be nice to hear some structured viewpoints.

Thanks,

Kalen

Subject: [skeptics-195] May I have your thoughts, please?

Dear Friends:
First, thanks to all who chipped in to help defray the cost of this Meetup page. We’re good for another six months.
May I have your thoughts, please?
(NOTE: If you click REPLY, you’ll reach the entire Meetup group. Which is fine, if that’s your intent. To email me personally, use [address removed].)
Holding Drinking Skeptically at Fiddlers Elbow means that people under 21 cannot attend, not even when accompanied by an adult, unless they happen to know someone who can fix them up with a passable phony ID for a reasonable price. Not that I am advocating, recommending, or suggesting as much. I am not. Honest. That would be illegal. So don’t even think about it. Still, if you know someone …
The dilemma is that I hate excluding anyone; yet the group as it stands shudders at the idea of a venue change. So, some questions:
• How many of you who are under 21 would attend were it possible? As realistically as you can, please predict how often you might show up, ranging from regularly, to sometimes, to once and then forget it, to “it depends, because I haven’t met y’all yet and for all I know you’re a bunch of jerks.”
• Question for all ages — what are your thoughts on adding a mid-month, non-age-restricted gathering? Perhaps held in a restaurant and called something along the line of Eating Skeptically. Think there's enough demand? Would some of you attend two Skepticallys* a month? Not promising anything, mind you, but it’s a thought.
• What other skeptical / critical thinking groups are any of you aware of that you might you recommend to under-21s?
• Other thoughts / suggestions?
Thanks for your help.
Steve Cuno
*I hereby declare “Skepticallys” a legitimate plural proper noun.
