3rd annual Golf for Wildlife - Coronado Golf course

Hi everyone! I am a zookeeper in San Diego and on behalf of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, we are putting together the 3rd annual Golf for Wildlife golf fundraising event. The event is on June 5, 2016 at 11am. This 18-hole golf event will take place at the Coronado Golf Course (2000 Visalia Row, Coronado, CA 92118) to benefit Fijian Iguana Conservation Fund for endangered native iguanas, a $500 dollar scholarship for a graduate student researching plant or animal conservation and to purchase land to help protect and save the biodiversity of Sumatra’s rarest wildlife.

I really want to get the community of San Diego involved in this tournament because it is a great cause, a great golf course and there will be some cool prizes.

A little about who we are:

The American Association of Zoo Keepers San Diego chapter (AAZK San Diego) is a group of animal care professionals who volunteer their time to educate the public and fellow animal care professionals on endangered species and habitats. AAZK promotes public awareness and contributes to local and global conservation efforts through fundraising and stewardship. Fiji Iguanas, part of the Fijian Iguana Conservation Fund at the San Diego Zoo, are in urgent need of our help. The San Diego Zoo manages the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the Banded Fiji Iguanas. The Fijian Iguana Conservation Fund was created to fund raise and help our AZA zoo community have a way to support all the amazing work going on in Fiji for Fiji iguana conservation. The Fiji iguana is currently listed as ‘Endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation (IUCN), due to habitat loss and the existence of an almost identical looking invasive species. Many locals mistakenly kill Fiji iguanas believing they are completely different species such as the invasive green iguana. Funds raised will benefit genetic research of several new species recently identified on various islands throughout Fiji, get cages for young captive crested iguanas at two facilities in Fiji, an egg incubator, the release of captive bred iguanas, and for surveys of iguanas, specifically for an island that was just burnt from a recent fire. Sumatra’s precious wildlife, both flora and fauna, are threatened by illegal logging, palm oil and rubber development, road construction and poaching. Key species such as the Sumatran Tiger, Sumatran Elephant, Sumatran Orangutan, and green sea turtle, are a few of many threatened animals in this region. Funds raised will help purchase land in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem of Central Sumatra, Indonesia. One acre can be purchased for $6.83/acres. If enough land is purchased, the reserve will consist of three protected areas within the forest ecosystem that will conserve 200,396 acres.

Tito's Vodka and Handlebar Hot sauce are teaming up making some tasty BloodyMary's on one of the holes!

CHALLENGES: Closest to the Pin, Furthest Drive, Hula-Hoop Challenge

RAFFLE TICKETS: 1 for $5, 3 for $12, and arm's length for $20

SILENT AUCTION: Silent Auction will last 30 minutes after the last team is done (All forms of payment are accepted)

**This will be a scramble style event. In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots are selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.

Awards, winners and cake will be served at the end!
