Early Evening at Land's End. A Beach, A Cliff, & A Tiled Staircase.

Details

This generally calm weather is supposed to last a little longer. Let's take advantage of it with a walk along the beautiful Coastal Trail and Eagle Point Beach at Land's End at sunset.

We start walking at 5:30 PM on the dot.

We'll meet in front of the Visitor Center at the Land's End parking lot. They sometimes lock the restrooms when the Visitor Center closes at 5:00 PM. We will have one restroom opportunity, about an hour into the walk. Please plan accordingly.

We'll take the trail along the waterside, then down to the beach and up to the cliff. We'll head back up the trail (warning: it's a good walk down to and a long walk up from the beach) and once we're at the top we'll be on the Land's End Trail, where there's one more serious uphill before we get to the end. We'll detour out of the park to visit the tiled staircase, then we'll follow Lincoln and El Camino del Mar back along the mostly flat upper route back to the Land's End Center.

This walk has some strenuous sections, up and down from the beach and along the trail. The trail is paved at the beginning, but becomes a dirt and stone path along the way. The trail to the beach has built-in wood stairs. The path on the beach to the cliff is narrow and somewhat rocky. We walk at a moderate pace, going more slowly and cautiously along the strenuous parts. It will take about 2 hours.

AFTER THE WALK: Sunset is at 7:20 and although the sun will be setting, it shouldn't be dark when we finish. The walk should end just as the sun sets. You might want to bring a blanket and a thermos of tea and enjoy the sunset and the rise of the moon from the beach after the walk.

Wear sturdy shoes that can walk on a beach or the trail.
Bring a jacket and maybe a hat.
Make sure you have water, hand sanitizer, and a snack to enjoy along the route.
We won't be taking full break, but we'll certainly stop and enjoy the views along the way. You'll want your camera.

GETTING THERE: We should be arriving just as other people are leaving so you should be able to to find a spot in either the main lot or the one across the road. The Land's End Visitor Center is at 680 Point Lobos, just below 48th Avenue (Geary Boulevard veers off to Point Lobos around 40th). The cross road is Merrie Way. Parking is free, but unattended. Leave nothing in your car.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Muni Bus #38 (Geary) ends at 48th and Point Lobos, just up the hill from our destination. Note that not all 38s go this far- make sure you board a bus going all the way to Lands End. If you don't mind a little extra uphill walking the #1 (California) goes as far as Geary and 34th, the #5 (Fulton) has a stop at 46th and Fulton, and the #31 (Balboa) stops at 45th. BART users should exit and Montgomery station and board a #38 at Market and Montgomery.

This is a fun walk for dogs (but we're hitting the beach, so don't be surprised of your dog find the water irresistible) Dogs are always welcome on my walks. Please familiarize yourself with our doggie guest rules.

Your "yes" RSVP confirms that you have read and agree to the liability waiver that can be found at the bottom of every Meetup page.

None forecast for now, but rain, really, really cold, or extremely heavy winds will cancel this walk.
