On the Waterfront at twilight
Details
Let's start our weekday evening walks with a walk along the waterfront as the sun sets.
We'll meet at the kiosk for DYNAMO DONUTS (alas, closed for the evening) at Little Marina Green, the open field at the end of Marina Boulevard. We'll have a quick peek at the Palace of FIne Arts before heading into through the Marina neighborhood that sprang up after the 1915 Pan American Expo and is filled with wonderful examples of art deco and modern architecture. We wander over to Fort Mason where we'll explore the old fort and the new paths before working our way down to Marina Green (restrooms) along the waterfront.
WE START WALKING AT 5:30 PM ON THE DOT. Please arrive a few minutes early to check in and use the restroom (directly across the field). This is a fairly easy walk, There is one hill up and one down at Fort Mason, and the rest is flat. It should take just about 2 hours. Sunset is at 7:25- if the weather cooperates, we'll end as the sun is going down over the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring a picnic or a thermos of tea and enjoy the view from the picnic tables nearby. Even with a bit of fog, the waterfront has a magical, calming quality.
GETTING THERE-
Public transportation is your best bet. Muni bus #30 (Stockton) has a stop at Mason and Yacht (although you'll have to walk to Chestnut to take it back) , and #28 (19th Avenue) stops a few blocks away at Richardson. It's about a 10 minute walk from lines #45 (Union) and #43 (Masonic) which stop near the Lombard Street Gate to the Presidio.
Driving-
You can park at Crissy Field, but it will be starting to get dark when we return. Remember that this is a touristy area, so leave nothing in your car.
ATTENDANCE-Basically-EVERYONE WHO RSVPS "yes" is expected to attend. If you have a change in plans, update your RSVP. No showing is very bad and will probably get you removed from the group. Late cancel is also bad and will be noted. EVERYONE WHO ATTENDS MUST RSVP. Showing up with RSVPing is not acceptable This walk is only open to San Francisco City Steps members.
Dogs are always welcome on my walks. They must be well-behaved with people and other dogs, and remain on-leash at all times. We'll begin and end near Crissy Field, though, where they can enjoy a good romp.
You are responsible for your own safety on all City Steps walks. Your yes RSVP confirms that you have read and agree to the liability policy found at the bottom of every Meetup page.
The weather is supposed to be nice, but "dress in layers" could be our city motto. You'll want a jacket, especially if you stay to watch the sunset. We won't be taking a snack or meal break, so bring something to enjoy after the walk.
