Established in 1927, the park is named for John Mclaren, the grandfather" of Golden Gate Park. At 313 acres, McLaren Park, San Francisco's second largest park, offers a wide range of both active and passive recreational opportunities.
The park is a signiticant biodiversity hotspot, diverse habitats, including forests, grasslands, and marshes, supporting over 300 reported species. Wildlife includes grey foxes, coyotes, black phoebes, Red-tailed Hawks, and the rare San Francisco forktailed damselfly.
