We will be doing an intermediate level, urban loop hike in San Francisco from Ocean Beach to Fort Funston and back. This hike is for INTERMEDIATE HIKERS only. The 7.2 mile route follows the iconic SF coastline along the Great Highway to Fort Funston Park. Expect panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean as we navigate a network of trails along the park's breathtaking sandy bluffs. Some of the trails in the park will be sandy, so be prepared to hike on that type of terrain. Also note that depending on the tide level we may hike on Ocean Beach for part of the return route. After the hike, anyone interested can join for drinks at a location close to the ending point.

THIS EVENT HAS A WAITLIST. DO NOT SHOW UP FOR IT UNLESS YOU HAVE RECEIVED AN EMAIL SAYING YOU CAN ATTEND. NO CRASHERS AND NO PLUS ONES ARE PERMITTED.

We meet at 10:00 am just outside the Java Beach Cafe at La Playa and Judah Streets and depart promptly at 10:15 am. We begin the trek by heading south along the Great Highway (currently closed to automobile traffic), connecting onto the Great Highway Extension at Sloat Blvd. At mile 2.4 we enter Fort Funston Park via the dunes and get onto the Sunset Trail. We will stop at the Observation Deck for a lunch and restroom break (mile 3.5). Afterwards, we make our way north along the Horse Trail (and possibly other trails) to return to the Great Highway taking us back to our starting point. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE: If the tide is low enough, on the return we may take the sand ladder down to the beach and hike along the beach until we get to Sloat Blvd. From there we would hike on the Great Highway to the starting point.

Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. Dress for the weather, as it can be cool and windy at times near the coast.
