A primary function of monitoring systems is distilling massive volumes of input data into useful information, and visualization through dashboards is a powerful technique for surfacing actionable insights. Unfortunately in many cases attention paid to getting dashboards right is lacking when compared to the focus on gathering and storing metrics. This talk explores some of the fundamental principles of designing dashboards, common mistakes, and the appropriate display media for answering different kinds of questions.
