A killer app -- a software program, game, utility -- drives the mass adoption of a platform because its use so clearly adds so much value to a large number of users. Have we found the killer app for AI - or are we still looking?

A list of historical killer apps include VisiCalc for the Apple][ computer, Wordstar (word processor) for CP/M and IBM PC, Lotus 1-2-3 for the IBM PC, and Turbo Pascal (thank you to Phillipe Kahn!) on MS-DOS. Aldus Pagemaker for the Apple Macintosh, Microsoft Excel for both Mac and Windows, and so forth. (This is not intended as a complete list.)
