About us

A heritage-based community for people born in Sicily or with Sicilian roots — powered by SLOC Friends of Italy.

About Sicilians in SLO County
Sicilians in SLO County is a heritage-based subgroup of San Luis Obispo County Friends of Italy, created for people who were born in Sicily or who know they have Sicilian ancestry on one or both sides of their family.

This is not simply a group for people who love Sicily.
It is a place for people whose own family story is connected to Sicily — whether that connection is close and familiar or something you are only beginning to explore.
Membership is for the person with Sicilian heritage. If your spouse or partner has Sicilian roots, we’d love for them to join us directly rather than have someone participate on their behalf. Spouses and partners will, of course, be welcomed at gatherings and experiences along the way. Reach out to us if you would both like to be members.

We are creating a community rooted in friendship, curiosity, participation, and shared Sicilian and Italian values.

Together, we want to discover one another.
Where in Sicily did your family come from?
What stories were passed down?
What traditions, foods, words, names, photographs, recipes, memories, or mysteries remain?
What would you love to understand more deeply?

You do not need to be an expert in your genealogy or Sicilian culture. You simply need to know that Sicily is part of your family story — and be interested in participating as we explore what that means together.

We are launching this community during Italian American Heritage Month, and gatherings will begin shortly.
What happens here will be shaped by the people who join us. We imagine meals, conversations, cultural discoveries, genealogy and family-history exploration, Sicilian traditions, language, music, food, stories, celebrations, friendships — and experiences we have not even imagined yet.
And yes, for those who are interested, we also envision traveling to Sicily together someday.

This is not intended to be a community of spectators.
We are looking for people who want to participate, share, discover, contribute, and help co-create a living Sicilian community here in San Luis Obispo County.
If Sicily is part of your family story, we would love to discover yours.
