Oceanside Trail Cabrillo National Monument

Details

We'll start at the Point Loma Tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument and ascend the brand-new Oceanside Trail extension to the Whale Overlook, an ascent of approximately 400 feet. After a visit to the lighthouse, we'll go back down the trail. Those who want additional exercise and recreation can then do an out-and-back hike along the coast. (We usually visit the military exhibit, but it is currently closed.)

Dogs are not allowed on the Oceanside Trail.

We'll meet at 9:30 AM near the restrooms at the tidepools (N 32 40.086 W 117 14.652), and step off at 9:45 AM. (Cabrillo monument opens at 9:00 AM.)

SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO. Go west on I-8 to the end of the freeway, then turn left and left again to Nimitz Blvd. Exit at Catalina Blvd. Turn right and follow Catalina Blvd. all the way to the entrance to Cabrillo National Monument. There you must pay an admission fee (with a credit or debit card) or present an America the Beautiful Pass (or equivalent). The pass will admit you and the other persons in your car. Then proceed a short distance and turn right into Cabrillo Rd. Go down, down, down. The road will level out and curve to the right. The parking area will be on your left. (If you reach the entrance to the sewage treatment plant, you have gone about a mile too far.)

Hiking shoes are recommended because the trails are steep in some places. Take water and use sun protection. You might want to take a snack.

I particularly want to hike this trail while it is still new. It will eventually become eroded and might be closed from time to time.
