San Elijo Lagoon Loop and Annie's Canyon

Details

This is a three - to four-mile loop around San Elijo Lagoon between the railroad and Interstate 5. It includes an optional side trip to Annie's Canyon, a popular slot canyon. You can climb up to a view point through the canyon, which is a steep, narrow one-way route with a ladder/stairway though the steepest part. Return to the lagoon is via a more conventional two-way trail with switchbacks and steps. Or you can use the two-way trail for both the ascent and descent. You can even wait for us at the bottom of the canyon; there is a rest area with some stumps and things to sit on.

We'll cross San Elijo Creek on a pedestrian/bicycle bridge under Interstate 5, and then head for the lagoon visitor center. The visitor center has rest rooms and a number of interesting displays. We'll spend some time there.

Finally, we will cross two more bridges on a trail running roughly parallel to the railroad tracks. We will use a tunnel under the railroad tracks for a small side trip to a view point.

We did this hike last summer, led by Nick. For details, see www.meetup.com/sandiegodayhikers/events/294440641. However, he added an out-and-back east of Interstate 5. I do not plan to do that section, so this hike will be significantly shorter and easier.

We'll meet at 9:30 AM at the north end of N. Rios Ave. in Solana Beach (N 33 0.2130 W 117 16.3507). At 9:45 AM we will start the hike.

SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Go north on Interstate 5 and exit at Lomas Santa Fe Dr. Turn left (west) towards the ocean. Turn right (north) on N Rios Ave. and follow it to its end. Park on the side of the road.

Wear suitable clothing, take water, and use sun protection (sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, etc.). You might want to take a snack.

DOGS? Leashed dogs are allowed everywhere except Annie's Canyon. If you take your furry companion with you, you'll have to wait at the bottom of the canyon.

HIKING POLES? They are helpful only on the two-way trail at Annie's Canyon. Do not take poles with you on the way up through the slot canyon unless they are folded up and packed away. They would be a significant hindrance there.

HIKING SHOES: Required for the ascent through the slot canyon. Recommended for the ascent or descent on the adjacent two-way trail. Not needed elsewhere.
