Mt. Soledad north side; and seals
Details
Overview: An urban walk, mostly sidewalk and asphalt, but some dirt trail. Distance about 7 miles. Duration about 3 hours. THIS IS NOT A CASUAL STROLL .... We'll be walking briskly, about 3mph. The walk includes a 2.5 mile uphill stretch with 850 ft elev gain. Route map is in the Photo section below.
Route: Start in La Jolla Village. Head to top of Mt Soledad via dirt trail in La Jolla Heights park. Marvel at the Al Bahr Dr bridge on the way. Pause at the top to enjoy the view. Downhill via Hillside Drive, then along the Coast Walk, to Children's Pool. End near the LJ Farmer's Market.
Hazards: The dirt trail in LJ Heights park is steep and rocky and can be slippery, so hiking shoes and/or hiking poles may be useful. We'll walk on several narrow streets that do NOT have sidewalks, so you should only do this walk if you are very alert to traffic and willing to take responsibility for your own safety.
Parking: Free parking on streets. On Sundays, I believe it is okay to park in the "2 hour parking" spots, because the 2 hour limit is not in effect on Sundays - but you should double-check that.
Restrooms: Portable toilets at the top of Mt. Soledad
Start time: Meet at 8:30am, start walking promptly at 8:35am.
Where: 7837 Girard Ave, La Jolla
