Blacks Beach & Torrey Pines
Details
Overview: A moderate, urban walk - half sidewalk, half beach/dirt. Distance about 7 miles. Duration about 2:50. Total elev gain about 500 ft. THIS IS NOT A CASUAL STROLL .... We'll be walking briskly, about 3mph. The walk includes a 1 mile uphill stretch with 300 ft elev gain. Route map is in the Photo section below.
Route: Start at the cafe at Torrey Pines Glider Port and head north thru the parking lot, then down a very steep dirt trail to the beach. North about 1.5 miles on the beach to Flat Rock. Then up the Broken Hill dirt trail into Torrey Pines state park. South on the golf course road, then cross to the east side of North Torrey Pines road to get away from the noisy road. South on side streets through the biotech industrial park, then cross Genesee and into UCSD. Head west and pass by Salk Institute and return to the Glider Port. See photos below for a diagram of the route.
Hazards: We'll be going up and down some very steep dirt trails, so you may want to bring hiking poles for stability. We are going near low tide, but still our shoes and feet may get wet on the beach. We will clamber over some boulders on the beach: balance and agility are required. Sandstone cliffs can collapse onto the beach, so it is best to stay away from the base of the cliffs. Though rare, there are rattlesnakes in Torrey Pines park.
Start time: Meet at 8:30am, start walking promptly at 8:35am.
