(new alternative backgammon venue in Central London - although we will still continue to attend the Civil Service Club).

Date/Time: Sunday 14 September 4-8pm, and possibly beyond!

Dear Backgammon Lovers,

The CSC is fully booked this Sunday. We are keen to play our favourite game in a different place that will hopefully be a welcoming, friendly and warm venue to try out again.

We will hopefully have this pub as another option, and who knows, we might use this venue more often in future.

Marlborough Arms

The Marlborough Arms, part of the Greene King group, is located in the heart of London and is a minute’s walk from Tottenham Court Road.
The nearest underground tube is Goodge Street Station which is on the Northern Line and a two to three minute walk.

Whether you're a seasoned backgammon player or a newbie looking to learn this fabulous game, this social event is open to all levels of players. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and enjoy this strategy game and bond over a shared love of this game. Nearby Public Transport

Apart from Goodge Street Station, there are many other transport options with underground, train and buses nearby within walking distance that serve the Marlborough Arms.

Tottenham Court Rd, Russell Square, Euston etc are all within walking distance.

Venue Food and Drink

About our backgammon social group

It is 10 years since I started and have grown our backgammon social group. We have held well over 500 backgammon meetings and events. We are the largest backgammon group in the UK with just over 1800 members. What makes our group special are its members and the warmth, humour and friendliness whilst playing this splendid social game over a few drinks.

We have about 30-odd regular members who play socially at all levels of the game. Please note that we welcome new players so do encourage your friends, family and acquaintances to join our group.

Dinner Time and Drinks and Food

In between the rounds of backgammon we usually sit for a meal around 5pm (I've been advised that the Marlborough Arms restaurant closes at 7.45pm and last orders is at 10pm on Sundays. The pub closes its doors at 11.

As this is a trial venue we will see whether the staff and its management are happy for us to stay late. The feeling I received was that as long as we purchase at least a drink, and possibly food and snacks, the pub will be happy to host us.

Please RSVP asap - I will need to provide the pub with an indication of numbers. I have reserved 12 places, but will hopefully be able to add more if there’s more interest.

Bring your own Backgammon Board

Love seeing the different styles and size of boards - my boards have somehow grown larger over the years. Please bring your own backgammon board. Should you not have a board please let us know in advance via the Meetup message board. so that we can make an effort to bring sufficient boards to play on.

Meetup Fee

From 2025 I will ask for £3 to £4 as the meetup fees have increased substantially in recent years.

Gentle Reminder

Know that I really don't need to say this but please be courteous and say thank you wherever possible to the staff. Also be warm and friendly with each other and enjoy the game. Should there be any issues please don't hesitate to approach me or whoever is hosting on my behalf.

With one or two exceptions our group plays international backgammon tournament rules. I have outlined these rules on our meetup page.
