Come join us for the 4th in a new event style we are trying out... Sarasota Wine and Fun "Somme" Series! We have some pretty savvy wine connoisseurs in our group and I have challenged them to put together their own events focused on their personal experiences and elevating our wine palates!

I will be hosting these events in my home. Members must have attended at least three public events to join us. Each event format will be slightly different and tailored to the wine and concept presented. Events will be small and intimate with light bites served to accompany.

Prepayment of $52 via the methods listed below is required for this event. Refunds will only be issued if a paying waitlister takes your spot.

Next up is Jackie Corso! Jackie holds the WSET Advanced Certificate with Merit, and she is a WSET Diploma Candidate. Jackie has been helping me select wine for events for years and I am so excited to spotlight her Long Island vs France concept!

We will be enjoying eight different wines from four different grape varietals! Each pair of wines will be the same grape varietal but one will be produced in Long Island and the other in France. This tasting is BLIND! It is up to you to figure out which hails from Long Island and which is the French wine!

First up....
Bubbly!
Sparkling wine vs Champagne!
We will learn how the flavor, aroma and experience of a bubbly is affected by the three grapes used as well as its method of production.

Second at bat...
Rose! Think PINK!
Long Island Rose - Since the early 1990’s, long island has begun to distinguish itself as a source of rose, most often producing dry rose wines that model southern France. The eastern end of long island has over 60 wineries that produce a range of rose wines.

French Rose - France is the top global producer of rose, accounting for 35% of the world’s supply. It also leads in consumption with one third of the wine consumed in the country being rose. Over the period of 2010-2024, exports of rose from Provence have surged by about 500%, with the US being the top importer of Provence rose.

Third up... We are starting the reds!
Cab Franc!
Leafy, aromatic, refreshing. the less intense, softer progenitor of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc is widely planted in the Loire and on the cooler, damper soils of St-Emilion, where it is often blended with Merlot. It ripens early and is more resistant to cold winters than Merlot.
It produces appealing wines in new Zealand, Chile, Long Island and reaches its apogee in Chinon, France.
Are you going to be able to tell which is the French and which is the domestic!?! It's not as easy as you think!

Last up... You had me at Merlot!
The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux — where its earlier ripening, softer tannins, and bigger berries make it a perfect blending partner to Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot also has an independent existence particularly in the US. It reaches its apogee in Pomerol, where it results in voluptuous, velvety wines. One of the most expensive wines in the world is Chateau Petrus in Pomerol which is 100% Merlot. We are going to learn why Long Island provides a perfect growing environment for Merlot and how to discern the Long Island characteristics from its French ancestors.

Guests will be seated at a table during the event. Lite bites will be served. I will reach out to attendees regarding a dinner after.
