About us
Everyday people learning to make every day better.
WHO
SOS 101 is for everyday people who are concerned about their lives and the world around them and want to learn how they can be part of the solutions. We believe everyone has the potential to be a spark in their community by learning, building better practices, and putting what they learn into action.
Events are facilitated by a former classroom teacher with experience in digital and hybrid learning, professional development, and language acquisition, bringing an educator’s understanding of how people learn to each SOS 101 experience.
WHAT
SOS 101 is a community learning cohort where we tackle the big topics everyone is talking about and explore what they mean for the way we actually live.
Through guided dialogue, expert insight, and community learning experiences, we practice thinking critically, communicating clearly, and solving problems effectively. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of each topic, along with tangible tools and practical next steps for applying what they learn in everyday life.
Topics include democracy and civic engagement, misinformation and AI, social media and digital networks, local ecosystems, physical and emotional health, and more.
WHEN
We believe learning should continue throughout our lives and respond to the world happening around us. SOS 101 offers learning experiences throughout the year, with each series focusing on a timely topic affecting our lives and communities.
WHERE
SOS 101 creates accessible spaces for community learning and dialogue, both online and in person, bringing together people with different experiences, perspectives, and levels of knowledge.
WHY
SOS 101 was founded by a classroom teacher looking for a way to do education better. When I left the public school classroom in 2021, I wasn’t giving up on my students or on education. I wanted to explore what education could look like if it prepared children and adults alike to navigate a complex society, not just as students or workers, but as people, neighbors, and community members.
SOS 101 is a starting point: a place to learn, ask questions, build practical skills, and turn what we learn into choices that help build a better future for ourselves and our communities.
