"Herschel, Uranus and Mary Shelley's Vision of Horror"
On the 13 March 1781, William Herschel turned his homemade telescope to the heavens and spotted an object “rather like a comet”. His discovery would turn classical astronomy on its proverbial ear. Uranus, as the object would come to be known, was not only difficult to name but was also described as “badly behaved” owing to the perturbations caused by Neptune which had yet to be discovered. In this talk, UK astrologer Alex Trenoweth discusses the medical advances that controversially flourished since the Age of Enlightenment, particularly the ethical questions raised in Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece “Frankenstein” that continue to haunt us to this very day. Have our inventions and “ghoulish tinkerings” made the world a better place or have we just made life a more terrifying existence?
