## Sapperton Canal, Valley & Woodland Walk

Post code: GL7 6LE
Start time: 9.00am
Distance: c8.5 miles
Total ascent: approx. 440 m

This walk explores one of the quietest and most picturesque valleys in the Cotswolds, combining forgotten industrial history, wetland habitats, hidden villages and beautiful spring woodland.

We begin by following the line of a long-abandoned canal, now gently reclaimed by nature. As we meander along the valley floor we pass wet meadows, streams, ponds and small lakes, all rich in wildlife.

The first section of the walk is largely flat and easy-going, allowing us to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace. The damp ground here supports a variety of unusual plants, and those with a keen eye may spot wild orchids and other rarer species hidden among the grasses.

We skirt past the edge of Chalford, passing Tankards Spring, we then begin our gradual climb out of the valley towards France Lynch, continuing across to Oakridge Lynch, through Iles Green, and into Siccaridge Wood.

The woodland section is especially beautiful in spring, often carpeted with wild garlic and early woodland flowers, filling the air with their unmistakable scent as we make our way through the trees before climbing back up to The Bell, where the walk concludes. If you are intending to eat or drink at The Bell afterwards, please let me know in advance so I can confirm numbers with the manager.

Please park on the roadside where there is ample parking. Meet outside The Bell at Sapperton pub, Sapperton, Cirencester GL7 6LE for a sharp 9AM start.

For those who would prefer a shorter option, the walk can be reduced by about 30 minutes near the end, bypassing the forest section as the end is in sight. I will continue through the forest, for those who wish to complete the full walk.

If it has been wet in the week prior, please expect some mud in places. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for the conditions and please bring a snack and a drink.

Please ensure that you arrive with time to spare, ahead of the start time.

Lunch: if you want to have Sunday lunch at the Bell please make your own booking in advance (it is usually fully booked on the day), and us know in the chat
