About Jamila Demby
Jamila Demby is the Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Access (EDIA) at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA. In this inaugural role, Jamila serves as the point of contact for EDIA initiatives, holding the Globe accountable to its Social Justice Roadmap, a 102-action item document stating the Globe’s commitment to inclusivity throughout the institution. Her work centers on creating policies, practices, and procedures to help staff, guest creatives, patrons, volunteers, and community members feel and experience what Jamila aspires for - that people of all identities, especially those who have been historically and presently marginalized, are seen, heard, validated, included, and feel a sense of belonging while living their full truth.
Before joining The Old Globe, Jamila spent 11 years as an elementary school teacher. Her dedication to social justice was evident in her classroom efforts, district-wide initiatives, and active involvement in the teachers’ union’s Social Justice Committee. This passion ultimately led her to focus on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Access work full-time.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Jamila finds joy in the exceptional theatre-making around her crafted by her talented colleagues. In her personal time, she fiercely dances on roller skates and plays
drums, also fiercely but at a VERY intermediate level.
