5mi Easy to moderate Lake Calavera and the Caldera with dogs

Please join me & my pups on a hike to the Calavera Nature Preserve in Carlsbad. We will complete a loop of Preserve which will include visiting the lake and maybe a trip up to the ridge of the caldera. Who knew Carlsbad had it's very own volcano?! PLEASE JOIN US even if unaccompanied by a furry chaperone. As always non-dog members are welcome!

This is an easy-moderate 5ish mile hike with a potential 600+' elevation gain (depending on whether we climb up to the caldera ridge). The walking surface can be hard-packed and rocky sand with some areas of soft sand. Strollers may not be able to make it up to the ridge of the caldera. CAUTION must be taken while walking as this area may be frequented by cyclists and we have to be on the lookout for rattlers.

MEET at Oak Riparian Park at 4625 Lake Blvd, Oceanside. There's a small parking lot there and a nice restroom in the park.

ARRIVE early as we will leave no later than 7:35. Check for traffic conditions before you get on the road.
BRING essentials such as water for you and yours, a snack, shoes with good tread, sun protection. Check the forecast and dress for success.
SAFETY with respect to your dog includes that your dog must be at least 1 year old and fully vaccinated. You may not use a retractable leash. And, nose-nose or nose-rear end interactions need to be avoided, especially at the start of the walk. If your dog is reactive, please keep them away from other dogs and in the back of the pack.
WEATHER may affect this hike. If we are having a heatwave, hike is subject for cancellation as there is no shade in the area. Please check here as the date gets closer.
