The Search for the Perfect Hot Dog Continues!
Details
Get ready to step back in time as The Search for the Perfect Hot Dog heads to a true Raleigh original: The Roast Grill! This legendary downtown institution has been serving up charcoal-grilled perfection since 1940, when Greek immigrants opened a tiny, no-nonsense hot dog joint that has stayed gloriously unchanged for more than 80 years.
The Roast is proudly old school. There are just 13 seats, no frills, and a menu that knows exactly what it’s doing. Hot dogs are grilled over charcoal and topped with the classics only: mustard, onions, slaw, chili—or any combination thereof. Which brings us to the house rules. Rule #1: Don’t ask for ketchup. It’s not stocked, not missed, and definitely not welcome. Rule #2: Cash only. No cards, no apps, no exceptions. The Roast doesn’t do “newfangled,” and we love them for it.
Wash your dog down with a cold beer or soft drink, and if you save room, treat yourself to a taste of Greece with baklava and other delicious Greek desserts. It’s simple food, done perfectly, in a place bursting with history and personality.
Join us at The Roast Grill, 7 S. West St., Raleigh, NC 27603, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2026, as we continue our delicious quest. Bring cash, bring an appetite, and bring your respect for hot dog tradition. This one’s a classic! 🌭
