Medieval Civilization: Millennia in Microcosm Week 160

Details

From Xenophanes’ rejection of anthropomorphic naiveté to Plato’s moral critiques, the Greeks sought to envision gods not as capricious figures, but as intelligible beings whose character and domain defined their essence. Each god embodied a distinct hue in the spectrum of values and natural principles, forming a pantheon as diverse as life itself. Only the Fates remained hidden, inscrutable forces whose irony became clear only at life’s end.
