Though not well-known, "Seattle Scatter," a concrete abstracted boat sculpture by Mark Lere, could perhaps be considered a quintessential site-specific Seattle piece. Seattle is interlaced with different neighborhoods, water elements and waterways, evoking many possibilities for connection and flow. From where will you look, and in which direction will you travel? Will you captain the vessel, or be part of the crew? And will the voyage be rough or smooth? These are questions to ask yourself when moving onto, through or around this piece.

"Water Mover" by Jenny Heishman, mimics the course of a downhill stream, activated by rain that flows down the red channels before reaching a blue bucket and draining away. Seattle is a place that is never far from flowing water. How will you flow, whether alone or with others? How will you conserve, share, or capture your sustenance? "Stairs to Nowhere" was designed by UW architecture students from the elements of a former construction staging area. This 1988 piece is even more relevant to Seattle today, as more and more of its buildings are demolished, revamped or constructed. A temporary stairway allows us to move from building to building, but when this stairway is still, it could become a monument to either aspiration or failure. Questions to ask yourself in this site: What are your hopes and dreams, your risings and fallings, your regrets and your reinventions?
