Let's get together before church and discuss this week's passages from The Daily Stoic! Each day of the year has a corresponding "devotional reading" (so to speak). Each week, let's discuss the readings since our previous meeting, from the previous Monday through the Sunday of the meeting, and share what resonated with us, what we found profound, and what insights we can apply to what's going on in our lives.
Each reading is about 3 minutes long. They're all self-contained, so you don't need to worry about catching up - feel free to jump in on any week's session!
This is an online event hosted on Zoom. You can register for it here:
https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIqf-2spzwoHNYJkpUJHobrD14SqEGfky0YWe'll end at 11:30 to give folks time to grab some food and freshen up before the Sunday Service.
You can grab a copy of the book from your favorite local bookstore or order on Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Stoic-Meditations-Wisdom-Perseverance-ebook/dp/B01HNJIJB2/Here's Amazon's blurb about the book:
"Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise.
"The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms.
"By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well."

"'Atheism isn’t an identity' some say. In American culture, though, I believe it can be," says YouTuber Genetically Modified Skeptic. Let's watch the first ~half of his video "The 8 Types of Atheists in American Culture" together and discuss it afterwards.
The first 4 types he covers are Ex-Jehovah’s Witness, Ex-Fundamentalist, Ex-Muslim, Ex-Evangelical / Exvangelical.
The last 4 types he covers, which we'll have to watch another time, are Ex-Mormon, Atheistic Pagan / Atheopagan, Sentientist / Ethical Vegan, and Atheistic Satanist (The Satanic Temple).
After the talk, we'll have a group discussion to explore the ideas presented, and to share related thoughts, resources, and personal experiences.

When I was studying philosophy in university, there was a movement afoot to translate John Locke and his contemporaries into English (though of course I read them in the original English). Philosophy Bro translates philosophy into… Bro. Join us for a fun, expletive-laced romp through what Jeffrey Kaplan calls “the most controversial ethics paper ever written”: Peter Singer’s Famine, Affluence, and Morality.
This week's speaker will be Jack.
After the talk, we'll have a group discussion to explore the ideas presented, and to share related thoughts, resources, and personal experiences.

- Online Service: Luddism and AILink visible for attendees
The word "Luddite" is often used as an insult now, implying someone is resistant to technology because they are old-fashioned or prejudiced against new things. But Luddites were a labor movement, with existential reasons to protest the new technology. How does this relate to the rise of algorithmic "creation" today and objections to AI art? How can we get the benefits of new technology without crushing people and discarding knowledge and skills in the process?
This week's speaker will be Eva-Lise Carlstrom.
After the talk, we'll have a group discussion to explore the ideas presented, and to share related thoughts, resources, and personal experiences.

https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88933248198 - In-Person Secular SocialChuck's Hop Shop Central District, Seattle, WA
Please join us for our in-person Secular Social!
We will be meeting at Chucks Hop Shop in the Central District. Lots of amazing beers and ciders to try, as well as non-alcoholic options. This venue is kid and dog friendly. Limited food is available inside, but they usually have a food truck on site and they welcome outside food, so feel free to patronize any of the nearby restaurants (Tacos Chukis!) or the PCC hot food deli.
There is only street parking, so if you are able to take public transit that is advisable (bus 48 and 2 are nearby).
We look forward to seeing everyone there!
