Habits shape our lives, our options, our emotional landscapes. Having the wrong habits can cost us our health, career prospects, and relationships that could otherwise be in our reach. If we have trouble starting a habit, sticking to a habit, or breaking a habit, we often think this is a personal failing, a moral failing, a lack of willpower, of motivation, or of the virtue of temperance. But habit building, and therefore temperance, can be learned, with the combination of rationality and compassion we strive for in this church. BJ Fogg has done the research to find us what’s actually effective at changing behavior, which includes compassion, not blame, for ourselves and anyone else we are helping make changes.

I gave a previous version of this talk in December 2021.

This week's speaker will be Eva-Lise Carlstrom.

After the talk, we'll have a group discussion to explore the ideas presented, and to share related thoughts, resources, and personal experiences.
