What we're about

We are a social group that attends a variety of films together--indie, arthouse, foreign, documentaries, classics, and occasionally popular films. After a movie, we often gather at a café or restaurant for casual conversation about the movie, about other movies, and other topics. Please read our "About" page to learn more about the group and its guidelines and rules.

The Duke - British comedy based on a true art heist

Thornton Place

We will be attending a mid-afternoon showing of the British comedy “The Duke” on Saturday May 21 at the Thornton Place Cinemas near Northgate. This film, which stars Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent, tells the true story of a couple who steal a priceless painting from the National Gallery, London, to force the British Broadcast Corporation to issue licenses to allow seniors to listen and view radio and television broadcasts for free instead of requiring them to acquire paid licenses. Here is a description of “The Duke” copied from rottentomatoes.com:

“In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, stole Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery's history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly -- he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend.”

“The Duke” currently has a 96 rating on rottentomatoes. Here is the link to that website where you can read or scan all of the reviews to determine if this film is for you:

Here are snippets from some of the reviews:

“Jim Broadbent is priceless in this canny, tender British comedy, based on a real-life art heist that bamboozled the police, as well as the scriptwriters of Bond adventure Dr. No.” (London Evening Standard)

“This spry and sometimes sentimental caper from Roger Michell (Notting Hill) is an unabashed crowd-pleaser, with a real-life Robin Hood at its centre.” (Radio Times)

We will be attending the mid-afternoon showing at the Thornton Place Cinema. Unfortunately, this film is being screen only two times a day (late morning and mid-afternoon) during the first week of its run. Consequently the screening times for May 21 are not available at this time but are guessed to approximate the screening times of the first week. Please check back on or after Thursday May 19 for the exact time for Saturday.

There will be an optional social hour at a nearby cafe/coffee shop after the this screening. Meet me outside of the screening room upon completion of The Duke (after all of the credits have been shown). I am an Asian male who wears aviator frame glasses. My cell phone number is[masked]. The phone will be on until the start of the film and will be turned on at its completion.

Please note that the Northgate station of the light rail system is open which means using this means of transportation for getting to and from Thornton Place is now very convenient.
