TALK #1: Stream processing to unified data processing

Speaker: Kostas Tzoumas, co-founder and CEO of Ververica (formerly data Artisans)

Speaker bio: Kostas Tzoumas is co-founder and CEO of Ververica (formerly data Artisans), the company founded by the original creators of Apache Flink. Kostas is PMC member of Apache Flink and earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Aalborg University with postdoctoral experience at TU Berlin. He is the author of the book Introduction to Apache Flink: Stream Processing for Real Time and Beyond as well as a number of technical papers and blog articles on stream processing and other data science topics.

TALK #2: Techniques for exactly once stream processing

Speaker: Tom Kaitchuck, Pravega

Pravega is a distributed storage service implementing Streams, open sourced by DellEMC. It offers stream as the main primitive for the foundation of reliable storage systems: a high-performance, durable, elastic, and unlimited append-only byte stream with strict ordering and consistency.

Abstract: Achieving exactly once processing is an important goal for many applications working with streaming data. Frameworks such as Apache Flink allow for this provided the underlying storage of the source and sinks support it.

This talk gives an overview of all of the different techniques for achieving exactly once processing of streaming data, and how they can be implemented. It takes a deep dive into transactions and how it is possible to make them both distributed and strongly consistent.
