Setting up for Android Development

Please join two women technologists Ana Redmond and Margaret Maynard-Reid for a hands-on code lab. We will help you get started with Android development and debugging, and create your first Android app!

Coders and learners of any ability are welcome:

• Developers who want to get started with Android

• Testers who need to load android apps from IDE to Android device to test

• PMs who need to load android apps from IDE to Android device to track

• Students who are learning or planning to learn android via online course

We will help you set up Android-Studio, run and debug your first android app, and start making changes to it. We will provide step-by-step instructions. As UW instructors, we know this is the toughest step for most people to get started with Android development. Many unforeseen problems happen. We will have coaches to help with setup problems.

You must bring your own Laptop. Minimum 4GB RAM is recommended to run Android-Studio + emulator. The laptop can be Windows, Mac or Linux. Running and debugging your app on an android device is much faster, so, bring one if you have it. It doesn’t have to be a Google Play device, Kindle Fire’s work too. You will also need a micro-USB to USB connector for connecting the phone/tablet/fire device to laptop. We will help setup an emulator on your laptop so actual Android devices are not required, although preferred.

Space is limited so please keep your RSVP updated so that others can attend. We may repeat this event in the future if turns out to be in popular demand.

We need 3-5 Android developers to help out as coaches. If you can help, please post in the comments below. Coaches will need to -

• Answer beginner questions patiently

• Help with adb, device, and IDE setup

• Collaborate with other coaches

Kirkland folks: this is a repeat of the same event on 7/20 at Google Kirkland.

Schedule:

• 6:00 Networking & Pizza

• 6:30 Demo of Setup

• 6:45 Code Lab

• 8:xx: Q&A

Code lab instructions are at

One more resource for those looking to learn android on their own - https://guides.codepath.com/android/Free-Android-Curriculum
I put my lectures online there too. The lectures may be somewhat out of date, but, it is useful to see the progression of topics to tackle next.

The presentation was perfect for everyone who wanted to get started with Android Development.

The organizers and coaches were very interested in helping us with the necessary information and troubleshooting of our code. Margaret did a great job in providing the context.

Overall it was a great experience and I am looking forward to the next event. :)

My wait list confirmation came at 7pm. No way I could make it from eastside at such late notice. Hope we have some repeat sessions.

I'll take one for the team. I'll drop out and let someone take my slot. Seems like Google could just put this class in a bigger room no?

Can I sit on someone's lap? Meaning, can someone attending (at the front row) put this on skype on her lap?

    July 26, 2015

    • Margaret M.

This meetup is a hands-on code lab designed for in person attendance. Given the popular demand, we may consider allowing attending online in the future. Right now mixing in person and online attendees may cause confusion.

I'm thrilled to see the high level of interest in Android dev, but I am feeling guilty about taking up a noobs seat. Changing my RSVP to "No" to give someone else an opportunity to attend. Enjoy!

Will linking to dependencies be discussed? And/or compilation with Gradle? I tried to migrate a project from Eclipse to AS with a few dependencies and could never resolve the errors. Same type of issue when i tried to run the KIK api example in AS. Hoping this session will help me understand where I'm going wrong! :-)

Ana, with so many people on the waitlist...should I give up my RSVP and register as a coach? Since I have a question that is more advanced, I feel guilty taking a noobs seat. Btw I got everything in the codelab link setup.

Are you still looking for help coaching? I would love to pitch in here - I'm fairly new to Android Studio (my last company was very slow to migrate over from Eclipse) but feel comfortable setting it up, setting adb up, finding the developer settings in various flavors of Android, and so on. :-)

Let me know - also posting this for the other date, since I'd be available for both.

We are transitioning from Eclipse to Android Studio, so I am much more comfortable with Eclipse but should be able to provide answers to basic Android Studio setup, emulator use, etc. questions, in case you still need couches.
