Seattle Nordic Dance and Music Meetup Group

Harry and Pat will teach the first six-week series this fall, September 4–October 9. They will teach some of the dances most commonly played on First and Third Fridays, especially those recently taught or soon to be taught.

The focus will be on polskas but may include other dances. You may request dances to be taught, as well. Singles and couples are welcome. We change partners frequently, and anybody can do either role.

The class is 7–9 p.m. at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N, Seattle (the upper, blue building, room 1). Take the #5 bus or park in a PNA lot. The cost is $55; $45 for Skandia members for a six-week series ($12/$10 for one-class drop-in).

Bring clean shoes to change into, with smooth soles and low, flat heels for easy turning. Show up any day; there’s no need to pre-register. Vaccines and masks are strongly encouraged.

Skandia's Third Friday night dance in September will be both live AND virtual! The dance is held at the Cedar Valley Grange, 20526 52nd Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98036. So, you can choose to attend in person or via Zoom as the dance instruction and music will be broadcast from the Grange. Singles welcome as well as couples.

This will be a special evening as we have visitors from Sweden who will be teaching and providing music. Helen and Stig Eriksson will teach Norskleitjen. This lovely dance from Föllinge, Sweden, is a Swedish take on Rørospols. It can be done to Rørospols music, so you can do this dance regularly at Friday dances.

You may request the Zoom link by sending an email by no later than noon on Friday to events@skandia-folkdance.org. Requesting the link gets your name on the admission list, required to join us.

Masks are now optional for all Skandia events. If you are feeling at all unwell or you know that you’ve been in proximity to someone who has COVID, please stay home and take care of yourself.

Note that First and Third Friday dances are paid events ($10 for members, $15 for non-members) although Skandia's policy is that first-timers can attend for free. For now, attending via Zoom continues to be free with donations accepted.

The free Beginner Scandinavian dance class starts up on Mondays from September 30 to December 2 (no class on November 11). The class is 7–9 p.m. in the University Heights Center, room 209 (top floor, north side). This is near the University of Washington, at 5031 University Way NE, Seattle. There is plenty of parking by the building. Use code 2850 to enter the building.

The focus is on beginners; advanced dancers are also welcome. Singles and couples are welcome. We change partners frequently, and anybody can do either role. We will cover basic turning skills and variants of waltz, pivot, schottis, hambo, and other lovely couple turning dances, as
well as fun mixers.

Bring clean shoes to change into, with smooth soles and low flat heels for easy turning. If you don’t have dance shoes, we have dance socks to help you turn easily. Show up any time; no need to pre-register.
