Details
Greek thinkers—from Xenophanes to Plato—challenged the naive anthropomorphism of myth, yet still saw divinities as intelligible through their distinctive characters, domains, and responsibilities. Unlike the inscrutable, absolute God of later traditions, each Greek deity embodied a recognizable facet of human values or natural principles, forming a spectrum of meaning and moral insight. Only the mysterious Fates stood apart, revealing themselves ironically only at life’s end.
