Your voice is a flame — and breath is what ignites it.

Breathe and Sustain, a monthly community vocal toning experience at Breathing Room Studio, where breath blooms into sound and we unlock the healing power of our voices.

Each 90-minute session weaves together guided breathwork meditation, freeform group vocal toning, and live sound healing instrumentation to create what participants often describe as a sound bath from the inside out: deeply restorative, surprisingly accessible, and profoundly connective.
In honor of the Fire Horse Year, we open this series with Breath of Fire — a rhythmic, energizing pranayama practice that stokes inner vitality, clears stagnant energy, and awakens the body's natural heat.

Then, we'll harness that energy as fuel for gentle, freeform vocal toning together as a community, as we give ourselves a healing massage at the cellular level through the frequencies of our unique voices. No singing experience required — just a willingness to explore.

As a closing gift, every participant will choose a small crystal charged with the vibration of the group — this month featuring carnelian, a vibrant stone of warmth, creativity, and courage.

What is improvised vocal toning? It's a simple, free-form practice of using our voice to sustain sound on a hum or open vowel sound. When paired with intention, vocal toning becomes a powerful tool for calming the nervous system, grounding the body, and rebalancing the mind. All sound is improvised — there's no music to learn, no lyrics to memorize, and nothing to perform. Feeling shy? It's totally okay to just listen — there's no pressure to make sound, only an open invitation. Your voice matters because it's yours — whether spoken, intoned, or silently felt. The magic isn't in "singing pretty" or getting anything right — it's in showing up. Still nervous? Bring an emotional support friend. All people are welcome.

What should I bring? We sit on the floor for most of the practice, so feel free to bring your favorite cushion, zafu, or anything else that helps you sit comfortably. A water bottle is a great idea too — your vocal cords will thank you.

Where should I park? Breathing Room Studio is located at 1001 NE Boat Street, Suite 2. Lot and street parking is available nearby. We recommend planning extra time to park and access the building.
