Route: begin hiking from Mt Rainier Nat'l Park's Summerland trailhead which joins the Wonderland Trail (WT). Continue SW on the WT. After crossing the Fryingpan Creek footbridge, at approximately 5,400' elevation, begin off-trail travel (skinning) and head south toward and west of Meany Crest. Once west of Meany Crest, ascend the Fryingpan Glacier to approximately 8,200' elevation. Reverse route.
Distance: 12 miles round-trip
Elevation gain: 4,000 feet
Pace: ~900 feet of elevation gain per hour
Duration: ~5 hour ascent and ~3 hour descent
Avalanche Gear: beacon, probe, and shovel
Avalanche Training: AIARE level 1 (or above) preferred. Minimum: Avalanche awareness training which included in-the-field simulated rescue training.
Ski Gear: Alpine Touring gear with full-length climbing skins, helmet, ice axe, and ski crampons. Ski boot crampons are optional.
Navigation Gear: I am bringing a map, compass, altimeter, and GPS.
