When I was a child, I was made to feel like the dirt on the floor. I was abused in every way and taught that self-love was selfish and that I should be wantless and needless. To survive, I numbed the pain with food and looked for love in all the wrong places. Two failed marriages later, including one to a narcissist that nearly destroyed me, I finally learned the truth: self-love is not selfish, it is your birthright.

Without self-love, we abandon ourselves in painful ways: staying too long in toxic relationships, tolerating abuse, ignoring our health, numbing with food, alcohol, or shopping, people-pleasing, striving for perfection, and settling for far less than we deserve.
