Human Evolution: Past, Present, and Possible Futures
Details
Human evolution is often described as a long biological journey — but is it still happening today, or has culture taken over as the main driver of change? Throughout history, different societies and eras have shaped human traits in unique ways, from physical adaptations to shifts in behavior and cognition. This raises important questions: did evolution meaningfully shape human groups, or is that idea outdated in light of modern genetics? And if evolution continues, what direction is it taking in a world dominated by technology, medicine, and global mobility?
We can also look forward. As gene editing, reproductive technologies, and synthetic biology advance, humanity may soon face choices about intentionally shaping our own future. Should we design new genes, new traits, or even entirely new branches of humanity? What responsibilities come with that power, and how do we define what counts as “improvement”?
Beyond the body, there is the evolution of the mind. Human behavior, cognition, and social structures have changed dramatically over time.
Are these mental and cultural shifts part of evolution, or something separate? Can we meaningfully talk about the evolution of consciousness, values, or collective behavior?
This meetup invites an open conversation about where we came from, where we are now, and where we might be heading — biologically, culturally, and mentally.
