Our identities are shaped by so many things. Our families, our culture, the people we love, our experiences, and the choices we make every day all play a part. Our identities also keep changing as we discover who we are throughout our lives. Self-expression is how we share who we are, through our style and our words.

Self-expression isn't just for Halloween.

• Does putting on makeup, or choosing a certain outfit, change how you feel that day?
• Do you feel more confident, more playful, or more like yourself?
• Do people treat you differently when you do?
• Why do you choose a certain color to wear?
• Why don't many men wear pink? Is it a personal choice, or a way to avoid reactions from others?

Most of us already switch personas every day. We may be one person at work, another with family, and another online.

• Which one is the "real" you, or are they all real?
• Which version of yourself do you prefer?

Psychological impact on the wearer and observers:

• Why does wearing a mask change how people act?
• Can a doctor's lab coat really make you look authoritative, so others take your opinion more seriously?
• How quickly do people judge us by what we wear, and how accurate are those judgments?

We'll also look at the history of masks. People have worn masks for festivals, rituals, and theater for thousands of years.

• Why did so many cultures, all around the world, develop the same idea of using masks to change a person's identity?

No prior knowledge required. We will create a space where everyone's opinion matters. Come dressed up, as yourself, or somewhere in between.

We consider our host restaurant as our extended family, so please order food or drinks to support them. If you'd rather not order, a tip at the bar is appreciated.
