Sensemakers Newsletter December 2018

From: Manon
Sent on: Monday, December 17, 2018 11:41 PM

Hi all,

The year is nearing it’s end and this Wednesday we’ll celebrate it with a network drink at Codam College, the new free coding school that opened up at the Marineterrein.
We’ll raffle off some T-shirts from the inspiring Thingscon conference earlier this month and will have a presentation by Jari Hazelebach from SpeakSee. Both parents of Jari are deaf. This inspired him and his team at SpeakSee to develop a solution for the 98 million people worldwide who experience a profound hearing loss. SpeakSee is a system of microphones that captures what's being said during a (group)conversation and directly transcribes it to text using speech recognition. This way, the deaf person can read what's being said and follow the conversation again.
CTO and co-founder Marcel van der Ven will attend via a video-connection from Shenzen. He will elaborate on the journey until so far and will answer questions. Besides that, SpeakSee CEO and co-founder Jari Hazelebach will hand over 5 Raspberry PI's including screens to support the Sensemakers! 2 of those will be raffled off, the others will be available for use during our DIY hands-on meetups.

Among our regular members a ticket to The Things Conference will be raffled off as well! With our friends of The Things Network we organize a deep dive into LoRaWan and a beginners workshop on January 16th. Paola will help collecting questions/topics, so don’t hesitate to send her a message.

Sensing sounds
In November we had a great Meetup together with Waag and Marineterrein about sensing noise pollution in the city. We will collaborate on this project, using it as an experience for our members to learn (by DIY!) about the process from sensing to having meaningful data in a dashboard. We’ll start with an introduction during our DIY-session on February 6th. Please let Manon know if you want to join!

A lot of people are talking about the world getting voice activated, “sound activated” might be a better description. Which of course can be used in both a good and a worrying way…

For those of you who can't join Wednesday, we wish you a very happy & healthy 2019!

best, Ted, Paola, Gijs, Manon
