Anyang Park Introduction to Outdoor Bouldering
Details
⚠️ Important Disclaimers
- Like any activity outdoors, this event is subject to cancellation up until the morning of the event due to weather conditions.
- While we are going to use every available safety measure, outdoor bouldering is BY DEFINITION an extreme sport, so risk of serious injuries still exists.
Introduction
Our bouldering club has a lot of very strong climbers who unfortunately have never climbed on real rocks and never got to experience the origin of our favourite hobby. Outdoor bouldering has notoriously difficult logistics: between getting crash pads, familiarity with the crag, hiking to the spot and depending on the weather.
I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience climbing outdoors and not have to worry about all the organization. All you have to do is show up!
📍 Event Details
We are going to go to the absolute classic boulder in the Seoul area, known as the "Potato Boulder" (감자볼더). Seriously, if you ever talk to anyone who ever bouldered outdoors in Seoul, they will tell you they've been to Potato.
This boulder also has the widest variety of grades in a small space, ranging between 3-7C (VB to V10), so everyone who comes in will have something to be challenged by.
In addition, the Anyang Park boulders are the most easily accessible of any of the crags and require a 5 minute walk from the nearest road.
After a few hours where everyone had a chance to work on some projects, we will take a lunch break and either go back to Potato or go across the road to visit the Submarine boulder. Outdoor bouldering is a sport where your plans change based on how everyone is feeling, how hard the grades are or even how motivated people in the group are to project problems. It's much more of a group activity than gym bouldering, we go everywhere as a group to try to make sure everyone is having fun and is sufficiently challenged 🙂
✅ Participation Requirements
- You MUST be consistently climbing at least red-tape level at The Climb gyms. This is done to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
- You MUST attend a short safety instruction session during the SBC's regular event on the week before this event (March 21 - https://meetu.ps/e/PTY6K/16g60z/i). There are things that everyone should know to keep everyone in the group safe. If you cannot attend, contact me to find a suitable alternative.
- Priority to participate in the event is given to regular members of SBC. Basically, if we know who you are and have seen you before, you are welcome to join 🙂
- If you are an experienced outdoor climber, you are also welcome to join, this is not just for first timers
🗓 Agenda
9:00 - 10:00 We gather for breakfast and prepare for the day
10:00 - 13:00 We climb at the Potato boulder
13:00 - 14:00 Lunch at one of the many restaurants in Anyang, or just gimbap at the crag
14:00 - 17:00 Walk over to Submarine/Gomul boulders and climb there
As I said above, this schedule is subject to change based on the group's decision, but this is roughly the format I've done in the past
🎒 What to Bring
- Climbing shoes
- Chalk
- Climbing tape (real rock cuts skin, very easily, it's not plastic anymore)
- Suitable clothing (there's a bathroom to change in if you prefer to not take the train in crag clothes)
- Shoes for a mild 5 minute hike to the crag
- Water, snacks, food - there is a convenience store 5 minutes from the crag so you could buy those there
- Flip flops/sandals (highly recommended) for when you aren't climbing at the crag. You don't want to get dirt on your climbing shoes, you don't want to walk barefoot, and putting on your hiking shoes every time is a pain
- Bug spray (highly recommended) - it's early in the season, but you really don't want to get distracted by a mosquito deciding to land on your ear as you are doing the crux move for your project
- Power bank (recommended)
- Tripod if you want to record your sends 🙂
