CSS's layout primitives were originally designed to lay out documents, not applications. We've accumulated a ton of crazy techniques to bend it into working for today's complex pages, but none of them are good; at best, they're fragile, at worst, they're incredibly fragile and break for users who have different defaults than we expected. Flexbox is the first step in making this better, as it defines a new layout algorithm designed for the components in today's pages and web apps. This talk will discuss some of the history and goals of Flexbox, show live examples of many design problems which become trivial to solve with Flexbox, and discuss the future of CSS layout beyond Flexbox.
