Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve Geology & Natural Science trip

Details
Learn about the fascinating geology of the Bay Area and the East Bay Hills with a ~ 4 mile hike. Thanks to quarrying Kaiser Sand & Gravel did many years ago and preservation that East Bay Regional Parks did we will see some well exposed volcanic rocks that make up a good chunk of the Berkeley and Oakland hills. Bring your interest in geology and the outdoors and we will have a fun geology hike, while we check out the views, bird watching, and native plants too.
• Terrain: some steep (up and down) fire road trails
• Park at the Sibley Staging Area, 6800 Skyline Blvd, Oakland
• Meet at visitor center (small building with geology displays and restrooms) right in front of you as you pull into the parking lot – I will be wearing a red baseball cap
• Bring: water, sunscreen, layers – it can get windy, good walking shoes or boots, and lunch or a snack. If it rains between now at the hike date, the trails could be muddy
• We’ll hike the south side of the Round Top Loop Trail, then the Volcanic Trail – the Park has geological sites identified with markers and a trail guide – for the most part we will follow the marked route. The old quarry pits and road cuts present some great rock outcrops.
• We will return on the Quarry Trail and the north side of the Round Top Loop and then back to the parking lot
• Total hike – approximately 4 miles but with lots of up and down grades – total elevation gain ~500’
